The Lincoln County Soil Conservation District, as well as all other conservation districts across the nation, came into being because of catastrophic events that happened in the 1930's. After the Great Depression and an extreme drought in the Midwest, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congress created the Soil Conservation Service. To better utilize the SCS at a local level, district offices were set up to be the liasion between local landowners and farmers and the federal government. The SCS is now the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This video clip gives a brief explanation of the Dust Bowl and the importance of soil conservation.
